Thanks. In fact using PAM was too painful for Fedora since I really
didn't want to get involved with making the pam_exim module generic
enough to advocate including it, and obviously I couldn't just
make /etc/shadow readable by non-root by default.

However, I've fixed the Fedora Core RPM to include Cyrus saslauthd
authentication in its default configuration file (with an empty string
in auth_advertise_hosts to disable it by default) so that Fedora users
ought to be able to get SMTP AUTH working more easily in future.
