This worked for me, before I upgraded:
smarthost:
driver = domainlist
route_file = /etc/exim/mail.relays
search_type = partial-lsearch
transport = remote_smtp
with the following in the /etc/exim/mail.relays file:
aol.com my.smarthost.net bydns_a
