I don't know of any mail clients and POP3 servers that support that
combination.
I maintain vm-pop3d (which does support virtual users). The passwords are
saved hashed (DES, MD5, whatever), but sent from client plain text. In
APOP mode, the passwords are stored plain text, and only the hash (of the
plain text and the shared secret) is sent across.
Having the passwords stored encrypted and sending a shared secret and then
hash back would be good.
Anyone know of a POP3 (or related) standard that is commonly used by
popular mail clients that does that?
(I Cc'd the pop-imap list, because it might be more appropriate to discuss
this there.)
