I use exim on several FreeBSD 4 machines. The port will install
/usr/local/etc/rc.d/exim.sh and start it (as a daemon) automatically.
I don't use it out of inetd, though.

Did you change /etc/mail/mailer.conf to point at exim ?

There is no exim man page. The specification is spec.txt.

Read the logs; exim may be panicing because of a misconfiguration and
you may not see it unless you look at the logs.

What does `exim -d9 -bt root` say ?
