Hi!
One of my sites has recently converted from dial-up to a leased line
setup. The only thing I changed in the exim configuration is that
incoming mail is now delivered immediately instead of being deferred
until next scheduled dial-up. Additionally, I added a queue run every
20 minutes. All outgoing mail is delivered via a smart host, that
machine is also MX for the domain and hands incoming mail to my exim.
The smarthost runs sendmail 8.8.8.
Since the site got its leased line, I keep getting a lot of SMTP
timeouts. Eventually, e-mail is delivered, but almost every single
message has to wait two or three hours before it finally is accepted
by the smart host. This doesn't seem to be affected by message size,
even very small messages are affected. After my message, you see a log
excerpt regarding a e-mail message that sat in the queue over the
whole weekend (grepped for the message ID, deleted the plethora of
"retry time not yet reached" log entries and anonymized e-mail
addresses, host names and IP numbers).
ISP says his smart host and the line are both fine, I say my exim is
fine. Any ideas who might be at fault here? All other internet
services work fine too and the line is all but saturated (timeouts
even happening 2 a.m. on a sunday). Incoming mail (which is delivered
by SMTP from the same smarthost I am unsuccessfully trying to deliver
my outgoing mail) isn't affected either.
