There is something important about Exim here that may not be clear.
Unlike some other mailers, Exim does not have any hard-coded behavior
for routing email. How it treats addresses is entirely and completely
specified by the local configuration file. As a result, fixing routing
problems such as what you're experiencing intrinsically requires
examining the specific configuration file, determining where the
routing decision is being made (and why), and changing it.

So the answer to your question of 'is it possible to configure Exim to
avoid this' is that it absolutely is, but no one can tell you how to
do it because how to do it depends entirely on how your config files
specify your mail routing.

(One way to think of this is that part of Exim's configuration is
basically a programming language that describes how to route email
addresses. Each specific Exim configuration file is in part a program
written in this language that implements your specific mail routing.)
