How are you sending messages? It it uses a commandline/pipe invocation
then the daemon you just started won't get involved.
Try sending from another system to this one, or try
a manual "telnet localhost smtp" (in another window,
and to get anywhere you'll need to type SMTP protocol
commands to it).
