I agree that in the simple level it would be relatively easy to code a wrapper (i did it for the aniquated cobol, in cobol: ). That's why i think we should adapt php-like interface for simple uses.
writing a wrapper is not part  of the core functionality and alow freedom for the new api
so, yes, new lib and a wrapper is th.e. way to go.
The old lib should theen have a limitted (if long) support period
