Perhaps that would be convenient -- but it isn't mandatory. And it
certainly doesn't mean that the filtering should be _done_ in the MUA.

Similarly, it's convenient if the MUA gives me a way to change my
password (although few do). But that doesn't mean that it should be
_only_ the MUA which checks my password when I log on.
