Make your changes to /etc/exim4/conf.d/* then run 'update-exim4.conf'
which will regenerate /var/lib/exim4/config.autogenerated which is the
config file that exim4 actually uses when it starts.

Don't forget to run '/etc/init.d/exim4 restart'.
