This doesn't directly solve your question, but it may save you some
time.

Check out the VExim project at http://www.silverwraith.com/vexim/ - it's
a virtual users/domains implementation based on MySQL and PostgreSQL
with a PHP frontend. From memory, there are some instructions in the
documentation, failing that, I'm sure it's been mentioned on their
mailing list (check the archives).

Even if you need to integrate it into your own solution, there should be
something there to guide you.
