FYI, I dug up a further source of delay in my setup -- virus scanning
with SpamAssassin. I disabled SpamAssassin scanning on authenticated
connections, with the reasoning that I trust my users (I know all of
them personally) and if their machine was infected with a spamming
virus, it wouldn't be using authenticated connections to my exim server
to do its dirty work.
Now my authenticated client connections are blazing fast again...
