I don't know that the 2.4G PIII is slower than the 500MHz G4. I
suspect it isn't. However, my G4 has 1GB RAM. This could be part of
the problem for you. I don't know what your swapping situation is.
Also, how fast is your disk? Still I can't imagine these two things
being a bottleneck for even a dual T1. It should be able to write
all the data coming in over a 100MBit line. I know I've used scp to
copy files over, while it was still processing mail through the T1,
and didn't see a hiccup.

How is your DNS? Cables? Hubs/Switches?

I think I'd start looking outside the server for signs of network
problems first. Exim is a very capable MTA and shouldn't have the
problems you're experiencing. Maybe someone with experience using
similar hardware can chime in and tell me I'm wrong. =-)
