IIRC, at the time it was OK with STARTLS, but not with our older
server's 'legacy' smtps on 465 or pop3s on 995, whereas Moz,
Thunderbird, Opera, GNUMail, Mulberry, PowerMail dealt with the older
setup or the newer ones.

Pre OS X, I don't Apple Mail even did any SSL/TLS.

Water under the bridge, now.

Exim is far better at offering whatever (reasonable) the client needs.

Great 'whine' reducer, is Exim. <g>
