Subject: [Exim] Occasional problem sending to hosts with both IPv4 and IPv6 connectivity
Every now and then I get bounces like the below when sending a message
to an MTA running on a host with both IPv4 and IPv6 connectivity:

----------------------------------------------------------------------

This message was created automatically by mail delivery software.

A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its
recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed:

   <address snipped>
     Address family not supported by protocol:
     retry timeout exceeded

----------------------------------------------------------------------

The bounces are fairly immediate, within 30-40 seconds and the log
extracts aren't much help:

2003-10-21 08:09:12 1ABfOw-0001uS-BK buffoon.automagic.org
[2001:438:1fff:fff7::1]: Address family not supported by protocol
2003-10-21 08:09:12 1ABfOw-0001uS-BK == <address> R=dnslookup
T=remote_smtp defer (97): Address family not supported by protocol
2003-10-21 08:09:45 1ABfOw-0001uS-BK ** <address>: retry timeout exceeded

It doesn't look like Exim attempts to get the IPv4 MX/A records.

What is odd that it only happens with one particular host, and not
others that also have AAAA records. The host in question is running
Qmail on FreeBSD 4.x.

Is this an Exim problem, or to do with the resolver on my RHL 9 box?
