Two or three reasons -
# Spam coming through your backup MX (if any) - I notice saarinen.org
doesn't have one ...
# Spam coming from elsewhere (not all nigerian crap comes from nigeria or
yahoo - I terminate about a hundred or two of these moron's accounts every day)
# DNSBL lookup latency - stuff like djb's rbldns
