We gave up on this - the Cyrus SASL 'feature-set' being the main
objection to Cyrus. The other big issue was getting the filtering rules
right - Exim has better filtering [esp. when we want email users to
manage their own]. Getting Exim to deliver into Cyrus sub-folders is
possible, but process expensive. Exim into maildir is easy peasy, fast
and efficient.

On the Cyrus front, we spent two weeks of background research and
reading, and then about four days hands-on effort to try and get Cyrus
rolling with Exim and our desired feature set. We probably would have
proceeded if integrating the authentication had been straight-forward
and felt reliable / production ready.

We then spent four hours getting Courier IMAP-SSL and POP3-SSL installed
and sharing authentication with Exim, without any Courier specific
background. The integration is excellent - Exim's support for maildir
formats means that users can control all their own filtering to deliver
messages into specified IMAP folders very easily. Use of maildir and
Exim SSL-AUTH means that we were able to very easily implement server
side Sent items, already marked as read, for each user, in a system
filter.

The most common suggestion on the Cyrus side was for us to change from
Exim to Postfix - but we have already been there and do not want to go
back. Our experience over the last month has strengthened our belief
that Exim/Courier is much more appropriate for us - fast, efficient,
reliable and easy to administer and manage.

<IMHO> The difference between Cyrus and Courier is akin to the 'What's
Right!' vs. the 'What Works!' religious debates - Cyrus has lots of
acceptance in the OS community, but does not yet cut the mustard [aka
not yet ready for prime time], and suffers significantly from SASL
issues. Courier - well, the author has distinctive opinions about what
he will / wont include - but it works, is fast and stable, and works for
our mail clients [webmail, outlook, outlook express]. </IMHO>
