Thanks Philip. So it's not necessary to disable dns in nsswitch.conf (it's a
dedicated mail gateway, so I can afford to do it - but disabling dns
altogether is (I suspect) not the way to go.

That was a sloppy cut and paste job. Realized this after I posted it :(
