if you sort through your logs you'll find out that that means a
permission error... something like "Expecting GID/UID <this> got GID/UID
<that>"
the easiest thing to do is recompile mailman to run as the same user as
exim runs as, and then take a look at:
http://www.exim.org/howto/mailman.html
and
http://isber.ucsb.edu/~randall/exim-mysql/exim/configure
