Auch, that's old software. Consider upgrading to something more recent.
That is, recent Debian is 2.2 potato which still ships with the ancient
exim 3.12, but oh well.

Anyway - Debian runs exim from inetd. If you remove the entry from
/etc/inetd.conf (don't forget to do al killall -1 inetd) and then
run /etc/init.d/exim start, exim should run standalone instead.

Assuming the config from slink is like the one from potato, ofcourse.
