As you might expect, paniclog contains panic messages. It is always
helpful to see what it contains. Otherwise, Jeff was interested in your
mainlog.

This is your problem. /etc/aliases should be a file, not a directory.
(The error message you got was confusing. I have made a note to improve
it.)
