Hello,

Yes, I did mean message to an awkward domain. It is further excacerbated when
said domain becomes unreachable and has about 8 MX records ...

In truth I am not so sure there is any need to do anything about it
really - these things happen and mail systems do need to be
administered, There are methods you can use to get around these issues which
I guess are a little idiosyncratic to exim but, is there any MTA out there
which doesn't have its issues?

We work on the Internet and sometimes networks disappear or peer points go
down or systems go down, there is not a thing you can do about it - tis part
of the job. We have used exim on all of our mail hosts for a good while now
and it has to be said, it works very well indeed - far better than sendmail
ever did.
