It will be overwritten for the duration of the if, but restored
afterwards. The expansion

${if match{abc}{(.)(.)(.)} {${if match{xyz}{(.)(.)(.)}{$3$2$1}}$3$2$1}}

yields

zyxcba

so I think you might be able to do what you want. However, if all you
want to do is extract the local part from an address, how about

${local_part:$1}

??
