Yes, I was thinking of using more discs. Thanks to everyone who has made
suggestions. I seem to have "tamed" the problem for now which, I think, was
caused by a large backlog of external mail. I've speeded up the way mail is
authenticated (we're using Portal's Infranet to store account details, which
means calling an external program to talk to it) and ran exim with the
queue_only option set & manually processed the queue, as suggested in one of
the FAQs.
