Maybe that's the difference. The version of patch I was using was 2.1,
and it didn't output the copyright stuff. I wonder what the "missing
header" is that it wants? I suppose I will have to get hold of a copy
of patch 2.5 some time and try to sort out what's going on. I have made
a note in my "infelicities" list. Thanks for the details.

You don't need to do that. Just edit build..../cnumber.h and change its
contents to "0". I will put a note in the patch instructions for the
future.
