pipex use qmail because it was the only sendmail alternative that the
mail developer at the time knew of, and it was an improvement on sendmail
(not saying much).
If the system wasn't in place and working by the time we pointed out exim
to him, I have a strong feeling it would have become exim instead.

We had plenty of "interesting" problems with qmail and it's queue running
model driving the (not small) machines into the ground, et al, which put
me off qmail nearly as much as DJB's attitude.
