I thought this an excellent and reasoned argument to allow mail archiving.
Let's face it, corporations can and do
- monitor inbound/outbound faxes
- monitor phone calls (e.g. telesales to insurance)
- open mail unless marked "personal/confidential"

So, since this is inevitable, wouldn't it be best to ensure it is done properly
and without nasty surprises?

The only thing I'd add to Tony's arguments are:

* a decent MTA like Exim is likely to do archiving better (more securely, with
compression, encryption etc), in a way I'd trust over and above
j-random-corporate-mail-system. Default options should be to PGP encrypt
archives, with compression.

* if it became a built-in function to Exim, an "X-Header-Archived:" header
explaining that secure/encrypted/compressed archive of all mail was kept,
would be a good way of ensuring people wouldn't forget that they were "in
camera" so to speak when mailing.
