The choice is unfortunately somewhat limited.
The University of Washington IMAP server works with standard Unix mbox
formats, and so is good if you have a legacy set of mail to support. It
is basically free.
The Cyrus IMAP server is a great setup if you can move to a sealed system
mail server where everyone accesses using POP or IMAP. It uses its own
spool format and runs under its own UID (all of it under one UID). It
seems like a good package. It is *not* free, but licensing allows some
usage and the academics are probably OK.
There is a Simeon IMAP server, which is a warmed over Cyrus package (which
will get me in serious trouble with their developers - but it certainly is
based on Cyrus). It is a commercial product. I guess there may be a
special deal for JANET people based on previous deals with ESYS.
