What will that lookup return; is it legal syntax for the uses
made of the macro? Indeed, *how* is that macro used?

This is all down to the config used, and (in case you can't tell)
I'm not a Debian user. Exim can certainly do what you want; the
question is how well it mixes with the Debian wizard-generated
configuration.

As far as Exim's facilities and the config syntax goes: the docs
are on the web at exim.org.
