It instead of If. A single appearance. That is all. A documentation typo.
Where?

More context:
Start quoting
When Exim encounters an empty item in the list, it searches the list
defined by LOG_FILE_PATH, and uses the first item it finds that is neither
empty nor "syslog". This means that an empty item in log_file_path can
be used to mean "use the path specified at build time". It no such item
exists, log files are written in the log subdirectory of the spool
directory. This is equivalent to the setting:
log_file_path = $spool_directory/log/%slog
End quoting.
Right after "use the path specified at build time".
2nd to last sentence from the log_file_path option setting.
As an aside: the spell checker marks subdirectory as wrong.
It prefers sub directory. With a blank space after the word
sub. It is for you to decide if the spell checker is too dumb.
