Ah - try using the "swaks" tool to talk to it.  This will give
the encrypted connection; it should offer you AUTH LOGIN (or
whatever) once you say EHLO to it.  This is how the "automatic"
works - exim parses the EHLO response to pick from the configured
authenticators.
