Can't you use possessive quantifiers here?
[0-9a-fA-F#\*] intersect [\-\.\(\)] seems empty.
([0-9a-fA-F#\*]+[\-\.\(\)]?)* is the same as ([0-9a-fA-F#\*]++[\-\.\(\)])*
