Okay, I was able to recompile libpcre for windows to version 8.32, and the
crash went away. So I guess it really wasn't a problem with how I was
calling it, but a bug in the earlier version.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Whoever's in charge of the
official site at www.pcre.org might want to consider updating the link to
the Windows binary to point to something that works.
