This logic was jiggered about a bit before the 4.72 release.
It appears that failure to open the file is always checked for, but in
particular I see that the change cleaned up some freed-variable-should-be-null
stuff, which might plausibly be related. Sorry that I don't have time right
now to run up a test myself, but does 4.72 fix this for you?
