I had hoped that the existing two build systems (configure and CMake)
would not need supplementing with yet another one, because of the added
work needed to support such a thing. I am getting the impression from
these messages that I don't need to do anything. In any case, 8.01 is
ready for release, so I am putting it without any further changes.
I do take one of the original points that having #ifdefs for
system-specific things in lots of files is messy. However, rather than
introduce yet another file, I think it could be handled by a suitably
defined macro. I have made a note to consider this next time.
