Incidentally, I don't believe your comment about PCRE version 6.x being
different. I have just tried 6.00, and it is the same. In fact, the change goes
back to version 2.00. Version 1.00 gives "bad back reference". For version
2.00, the Changelog lists this new feature: "A backreference to itself in a
repeated group matches the previous captured string." This is listed as a new
feature from Perl 5.005. I suspect the behaviour has remained the same ever
since. ... I will now look to see if there is any way of easily fixing this.
