Relaxed default configurations would be what allows people to write software
that doesn't send HELO (although I've never seen any; they tend to always
assume pipelining is available instead). There are other interoperability
configuration options not enabled by default (e.g. allowing "_" in HELO,
ignoring lack of synchronisation).
