Eduardo, Graeme & others,

Sorry if the message thread is broken. This
is the best I can do with only a Web MUA.

emk> So your ISP handles your mail, and you want to user their services?

Yes. That is my only access to SMTP.

emk> ... you'll need exim only to send mail to the ISP's smarthost, ...

Exactly what I aim for.

emk> You might even consider other simpler

programs that only have this send-to-smarthost capability, ...

I've thought about it but never found a good
candidate software in Debian ... and Exim is
the default MTA in Debian.

emk> You'll also need fetchmail or a similar program, ...

fetchmail and qpopper were easily installed and
configured. They have worked nicely for over a year.

emk> ... to retrieve the mail that your ISP receives

and stores in their servers for you.

I can't avoid questioning the wisdom of exim4-config
configuring sending and receiving in one effort. After
all, POP3 and SMTP are independent protocols. For anyone
unfamiliar with protocols, this is confusing at best.

gf> Your primary problem is that you've configured exim to accept mail for

shaw.ca.

OK, thanks. Fixed. In using exim4-config I had
confused "my domain" and "accept for domain".

gf> ... start by reading the docs that come with the package ...

Finding such things in the huge filesystem is often
a challenge but I see that exim4.man cites a README
under SEE ALSO.

gf> ... debian-specific mailing list.

Will try to use it for the next problem.

gf> ... would have helped if you'd stated your OS and version

of Exim, too.

Visible in the top of the log cited in my original
query with subject "testing an address".

I guess it could have been in the message.

Thanks; I've made a little progress.

              ... Peter E.
