There are two short-term solutions. One is to install g++. :-) The
other is to run ./configure --disable-cpp.

I don't know why configure checks for g++ if it ignores what it finds
and still claims a c++ compiler. This may be some documented but
non-intuitive behavior in configure, or we may be doing something wrong.
I'll look into it when I have a chance, but with --disable-cpp it's
not as high a priority.
