There's about to be a draft RFC on that subject - the ietf-smtp wg is
busy with it.

Probably best not to encourage non-compliant experimental
implementations in the meantime. (I haven't looked at Sam's work, so
I'm merely assuming it's not compliant with something written after it
was done....)
