Run a debug session:
exim -d -bt tom-hanks@???
This is a configuration problem on the affected machine, not a generic
problem - there are literally thousands of messages in the list archives
where the sender has a dash (hyphen) in their address, as the list
itself is exim-users@??? and the envelope sender for the list is
exim-users-bounces+recipient.domain@???!
