Just so you know I'm not completely crazy:

c [7:03] /var/log/exim # strings /usr/sbin/exim | grep exim.conf
/usr/local/etc/exim/configure

And /usr/local/etc/exim/configure is a perfectly valid looking exim.conf
file.
