The From line is specific to the mbox format (and perhaps others). In mbox,
it serves as (part of a) message separator.
It serves no function in maildir format, where the messages are in
individual files.
RFC 2822 has no say in how messages are stored on the host once received
(although they are generally pretty much as RFC 2822 wants them to be
transmitted). The From line is not transmitted in SMTP.
(I'm talking about the From<space> line, not the From: header. So were
you.)
See the Exim spec...you can force the spurious From line to be added if you
really want to. But it may surprise various programs.
