The default configuration doesn't have any authenticators enabled. Did
you enable them?

That sounds like you either didn't read the README file or didn't
understand it. If it's the former, please re-read, if it's the latter,
I need to make improvements.

Depending on whether you have chosen the split or non-split config,
you either need to edit the appropriate file in /etc/exim4/conf.d, or
/etc/exim4/exim4.conf.template.

By default, we don't have auth_advertise_hosts set at all, so it
should advertise AUTH to all hosts when authenticators are configured.

At your level of knowledge, I'd classify that as a Bad idea. Turning
off all automatic configuration.

Try "exim4 -bP authenticator_list" to see which authenticators are
configured.
