This seems to be an increasingly common requirement :-/

An alternative way to solve the problem is to use a different smarthost,
for example on a co-located box (yours of a friend's perhaps), or in your
case you could configure Exim on your home computer to send via
smtp.hermes.cam.ac.uk with SMTP AUTH. The disadvantage of using
smtp.hermes is that it provides a submission service rather than a
smarthost service (it's intended for use by MUAs not MTAs), so it fiddles
with the message header a bit to record the authenticated user.
