[exim] where did the messages go?

So I've got exim setup to do vacation away messages via an autoreply
transport, and I noticed in the spec it says that autoreply doesn't
cause the messages to actually be transmitted. My question is - where
do they go? For that matter, why are they not transmitted, and what
might I be able to do to enable their transmission while still sending
the autoreply? Sure, the person's out of the office, but that doesn't
mean they don't want their email... ;)
