We have three MX servers, and I've found that some spammers hit the
lowest priority machine (300); some target the middle priority (200),
but most still hit the primary server (100). Additionally, we have
business relationships with two companies that have... interesting MX
choices. One of them runs an SMTP server that is so old that it doesn't
understand EHLO; it always sends mail to the lowest priority machine
(300), and will bounce mails before trying other two. The other always
hits the middle priority server (200), and will then move to the primary
in network outages.
So, be careful about simply dropping mail from phantom MX servers --
there are a lot of broken MTAs out there, and you might be rejecting
legitimate mails.
