Verizon's servers are horrible. They have poorly implemented sender
verification, and have severe problems with their edge SMTP servers
communicating with with their MTA servers. To top it off, they are
totally unresponsive - never responding to any emails with even a simple
auto-ack. They won't even respond to support requests from their own
customers in regards to email (I just happen to use Verizon DSL, but not
their email servers due to exactly this and other issues.)

Like the rest of us, you are SOL. If you have other ways to contact your
customer, suggest that they use some other email provider.
