ah, that could be it. kavdaemon is running as root, but /var/spool/exim/*
has permissions 750 with user/group exim/exim

it doesn't seem to be putting anything there, which is one of the reasons
why i was getting frustrated.
i'll go check syslog, even though the config suggested it was using its own
log file.
