That is exactly the case. First, some have suggested buying additional
services to resolve this problem. When my daughter asks for a bicycle,
I'm not going to say "sorry, but daddy has to pay for a third-party
smarthost because some elitist pinheads won't accept his email
otherwise." My daughter wins, you lose.
It's Absolutly the case that more and more ISP's are assigning static
IP's out of the same space as dynamic, and that they won't set the PTR
record for you.
The RFC's are both permissive and restrictive, but they also tend to
"error" towards being permissive. While you can probably point at some
little detail that permits rejecting mail on a technicality in regards
to PTR records, you are violating the spirit of openness and acceptance
of the net. I bet that we will be seeing some new RFC's in the near
future that address some of these issues. The Larger internet community
understands reality and will clarify the standards to reflect current
practices and needs.
As to a reality pill, I RARELY encounter an email server that uses DUL /
Dynamic IP blocking. I NEVER encounter it in any larger businesses. In
the rare case I DO encouter it, a friendly chat with the president /
owner and the block is gone when they realize that it can cost them
business. No word as to whether the BOFH running their email server
still has a job or not...
